Mini Meatball Subs

Mini Meatball Subs are the ultimate camping meal portable, delicious, and easy to make over a campfire. Perfect for outdoor adventures.

Equipment

  • Campfire grill grate
  • Cast iron skillet or Dutch oven
  • Aluminum Foil
  • Long-handled tongs
  • Heat-Resistant Gloves
  • Cooler

Ingredients
  

Main Ingredients (for 12 sandwiches):

  • 24 pre-cooked mini meatballs store-bought or homemade
  • 2 cups marinara sauce jarred or homemade
  • 12 mini sandwich buns
  • 12 slices mozzarella or provolone cheese

Optional Toppings:

  • Grated Parmesan cheese
  • Fresh basil leaves
  • Red pepper flakes
  • Sautéed onions or roasted peppers

Storage Tip:

  • Keep meatballs and cheese in airtight containers in a cooler. Store buns in a resealable bag to maintain freshness.

Instructions
 

Set Up the Campfire

  • Build a medium fire and let it settle into hot embers.
  • Secure a grill grate over the fire for stability.

Heat the Marinara Sauce and Meatballs

  • Place a cast iron skillet or Dutch oven on the grill grate.
  • Add marinara sauce and heat for 2–3 minutes.
  • Stir in pre-cooked meatballs and simmer for 8–10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until fully heated.

Toast the Buns

  • Slice the buns (if not pre-sliced) and lightly toast them on the grill grate.

Assemble the Subs

  • Place 2–3 meatballs inside each bun.
  • Spoon extra marinara sauce over the meatballs.
  • Add a slice of mozzarella or provolone cheese on top.

Melt the Cheese

  • Wrap each sandwich in aluminum foil.
  • Place the wrapped sandwiches near the edge of the fire and heat for 2–3 minutes until the cheese melts.

Serve Hot

  • Carefully unwrap the sandwiches and garnish with Parmesan and basil. Serve immediately.
